Brook RED acknowledges that the contributions of people with lived experience have often been undervalued and unpaid. We deeply value the expertise that lived experience brings and are committed to ensuring this work is recognised as paid work wherever appropriate.
Contributions such as participation in steering committees, working groups, co-design activities, consultations, and similar engagements will be compensated in line with Brook RED’s payment guidelines.
Brook RED recognises the importance of lived experience expertise and affirms that this work should be appropriately remunerated. Payments may be made for, but are not limited to:
- Attending meetings
- Participating in working groups or co-design activities
- Reviewing documents or providing feedback
- Contributing to consultations or workshops
For longer-term or milestone-based projects, payments may be made at agreed stages throughout the project lifecycle.

Brook RED will:
- Clearly outline the activity, expected scope of work, desired outcomes, and any limitations or boundaries relevant to the work
- Appropriately manage meeting times and provide sufficient notice for invitations and scheduling
- Provide opportunities for participants to check in, ask questions, and raise any concerns they may have
- Ensure payment processes are transparent and completed in a timely manner
- Provide a safe, respectful, and inclusive participation environment
responsibilities
Participants are expected to:
- Be clear about the capacity in which they are attending (for example, as an individual with lived experience or as a representative of an organisation)
- If participants are being paid by another source to attend (e.g., receiving salary from their employer for the same activity), they will generally not be eligible for additional payment from Brook RED
- Provide accurate and complete details required to process payments when requested (e.g., correct bank details, invoices if applicable)
- Manage any personal impacts of these payments on their taxation, Centrelink benefits, or other financial arrangements
